Pygmy Rattlesnake

Sistrurus miliarius

Description:

This little guy was only 8 inches long. Gray snake with dark blotches on the side and back with an orange dorsal stripe. These guys have a tiny rattle compared to other rattlesnakes and are rarely heard, even if they are buzzing away.

Habitat:

The first photo shows the snake as I found him, I caught him in one of the traps I am using for my Master's research. The other two photos show him when I let him out of the trap and moved him several meters away. Area is really sandy soil with few post oaks and a complete understory of lady ferns.
