Two-lined Spittlebug

Prosapia bicincta

Description:

In its adult state, Two-Lined Spittlebug is boat-or wedge-shaped with reddish eyes and legs. Their bodies are dark brown to black in color with two prominent reddish-orange bands across the wings and a thinner band across the region between the body and head. Nymphs are pale yellow with a small orange spot on each side of the abdomen which enlarges after each molting. These nymphs are usually covered by a “spittlemass” a white, frothy protective barrier. Adults do not produce “spittle masses”, but will jump and fly short distances when disturbed.

Habitat:

It was crawling along the concrete retaining wall in the xeric portion of a wildlife habitat yard.

Thank you, Machi. I have often seen the foamy bubbles on plants, but I have never seen the adult.
