Eastern Comma Butterfly

Polygonia comma

Description:

The caterpillar has some nasty-looking spines. The cocoon is a bit spiky, with golden spots. The butterfly itself has wings akin to the shape of a leaf, and the top of its wings are orange with black spots. The bottom of the wings are a mottled brown, and on the bottom of the hind wings it has a white mark that looks like a comma, giving it its common name.

Notes:

Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
