Yes, your friend is correct in his description. It's just that I've never seen a yellow jacket that wasn't, well, yellow, and noticeably striped to boot. Your critter does appear to have brown hair on its thorax, and I can see what looks to be a mass of yellow pollen on its hind leg. So, I'm still leaning towards bee.
Hi Lori, I've got the information from a biologist it is a yellowjacket, this is what he said:
Yellowjackets, in contrast to honey bees, are not covered with tan-brown dense hair on their bodies and lack the flattened hairy hind legs used to carry pollen.
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Hymenoptera
Family: Vespidae
Subfamily: Vespinae
Genus: Vespula or Dolichovespula

Unfortunately I don't have any more pictures. You might be right I'm not an expert on insects. I'll ask a friend that might know better.
Hi Anna. That critter looks more bee-like than wasp-like. Do you have any more photos of it?
