Eastern Painted Turtle

Chrysemys pivcta picta

Description:

These colourful little turtles are the most common turtles in Nova Scotia. These turtles are very common in both Digby and Annapolis counties (southwestern Nova Scotia), however, they are becoming less common or absent in other areas of the province. Their diet consists of snails, insects, and some plant matter.

Habitat:

They can be found in and around small ponds, lakes, and streams and can often be seen sunning themselves on a rock or log. They nest in sand or gravel areas then the young surface from the nest in the fall.

Notes:

We actually rescued these two, as they were crossing the road and would have been flattened by cars. After taking the pictures we released them back into the lake.

Those aren't snapping turtles. Painted turtles maybe.

It is not clear in this picture, but they had beak-like jaws.

You sure this isn't a Painted Turtle? I had a snapper for a pet when I was a kid and it didn't look like these fellers.
