Juvenile red-shouldered hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

The chest of the juvenile red-shouldered hawk is streaked.

Habitat:

While walking on a wooded path at a county park in Millersville, Maryland, I came upon this juvenile red-shouldered hawk sitting on the ground no more than 5 feet in front of me. Looked like he was guarding something on the ground but not sure. I just took his picture and went on another path so I would not disturb it.

Thanks for comments SargonR and ChristyHolland. After more web research I now think this is a juvenile red-shouldered hawk. We have an adult red-shouldered hawk that is a permanent resident at our county park and this May be an offspring.

Very nice series! Not a Red-Tailed Hawk though...I'm thinking it might be a juvenile Broad-Winged Hawk. Red-Tails would show a much clearer belly-band instead of a smattering of brown feathers across the front. I'd want further clarification of the species, though.
