American Robin

Turdus migratorius Linnaeus

Description:

Common in summer, uncommon in winter in Nova Scotia. The American Robin is a known carrier of the West Nile virus.

Notes:

The robin is one of the best known and most popular birds of garden, farm and countryside. Very hungry robins will eat raisins, bread crumbs, hamburger meat and apples, especially if they are over ripe and/or chopped up into berry-sized pieces. However, in most cases, American Robins ignore handouts preferring to feed instead from wild berry bushes.
