Cicada

Description:

This is probably one of the "dog days" type of cicadas that come out later in the summer.

Habitat:

This guy was in a residential area. There are popcorn (chinese tallow)(a highly invasive species), oak, a sycamore, and various other trees in the area.

Notes:

This is not a Periodical Cicada as those are black and have red eyes and apparently last came out in this region around '98. It seems likely to be in the Tibicen genus. possibly these species: Linne's cicada (Tibicen linnei) Eastern scissor grinder (Tibicen winnemana) Southern Dog Day Cicada (Tibicen davisi) Scissor Grinder (Tibicen pruinosus) http://bugguide.net/node/view/5949/bgima...

By the way Tibicen winnemanna!!! - That's a nice find for central Alabama!
They are scattered across the state but seem to be most associated with urban environments in the southern parts of the range.

Populations in the deep South have more tan on the dorsum of the abdomen

Definitely not canicularis!
T. canicularis is a northern species ranging only into the App. Mountains of the Southeast.

The tan markings along the dorsum of the abdomen are diagnostic of winnemanna and cannot be confused with any other cicada in the South.

Compare winnemanna http://bugguide.net/node/view/236729
with canicularis http://bugguide.net/node/view/12461
