Hoolock hoolock
The only species of ape found in India, The Western Hoolock Gibbon is leading an extremely difficult existence mainly in small pockets in the North Eastern corner of India. I captured the male (black) and the female (cream) in the state of Assam which are two of a troop of seven Gibbons who are living isolated from their habitat of tall evergreen trees because of habitat destruction. Efforts are underway to rejuvenate the forest corridor at the grassroots level and hopefully soon they will be flying amongst the trees.
They live in small groups in evergreen forests. Almost totally arboreal their fingers and hand and feet are adept at gripping and traveling from tree to tree. That has proved their undoing to a certain extent since any breakage in the forest corridor leaves them isolated since they can hardly travel on the ground.
Their resonating calls are a joy to hear in the stillness of the rainforest.

thanks Pralay for your beautiful spotting. And such good shots also, clear and colourful... Thats quite something getting a SOTD on your first shot! May there be many more... They remind me of some of the lemurs in Madagascar that hang on trees like that also.

The hoolock gibbon is the only species of ape native to India and one of the World's most endangered primates. Less than 5,000 individuals remain, and the population continues to decline due to habitat loss.
