A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Meleagris gallopavo
Heavy bodied chicken-like bird, with broad short wings mottled in color. Red, featherless, long neck with a bluish colored head. Suspect the adult here is female due to lack of "long breast feathers."
Area is a gated man-made lake community, surrounded by rural agricultural land, and some deciduous forest areas. In areas that are not mowed, the land is old fields within the community, and are mowed biannually. Ditchlines and treelines are left untouched.
I believe this is a hen and chicks. We have a small children's pool we keep with water for the wildlife to drink from that these beautiful birds use frequently. I am sure the cracked corn and sunflower seeds falling from the bird feeders are a treat to them as well.

Sweet spotting.
Great spotting, Melinda. I really like that you add notes too. They really add to the enjoyment of the spotting. Congrats on your SOTW.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
Beautiful.....
