open sandy beaches, on gravel or shell bars with sparse vegetation, or on mats of sea wrack in saltmarsh
There was a large flock of these this morning at the beach (with a few Laughing gulls mixed in, see pic 2, can you find the gull?). It was very exciting as I've never seen this birds before. In Florida they are listed as special concern due to nesting beach habitat loss.

Nice series; they are striking birds and it always seems to me that their bills are just a little too big. :)
