I'm pretty sure this is our common garter snake here in missour. These are really common in our area, I used to have one as a pet for a while. You can tell by the markings on it's back, the little head, the size, etc. They act like they're going to bite you and they can pinch you, so wear gloves if you grab one. If you want to pick it up, make sure it's pupils are round!! They also have a habit of deficating on you as a defense, and it smells pretty bad.
