Hoary Bat

Lasiurus cinereus

Description:

Another species in the "tree bat" group (see http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/589...), the hoary bat is another colorful bat that roosts during the day in the trees. This species gets the name "hoary" because of its frosted, grizzled fur, similar to the hoary marmot (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/120...). This bat is huge compared to other bats found in the eastern United States with a wingspan over a foot long!

Notes:

This individual was captured while doing a mist net survey. Photos were taken while the bat was being measured by a coworker.
