American barn owl

Tyto alba

Description:

Medium-sized bird with a unique flattened, heart-shaped face. When flying overhead at night it looks entirely white.

Habitat:

Willamette Valley of Oregon.

Notes:

This individual was a long-term resident at a wildlife rehab center, and was estimated to be 15 years old. Barn owls are common all over the northern hemisphere. They do, indeed, like to roost in barns.
