African Fish Eagle

Description:

white head and tail of the adults makes this an easily identifiable member of the raptor family in Africa. Perched, their dark wings often over the white tail. Like the similar N American bald eagle, the juveniles are dark plumed and the head and tail gradually lighten in a series of moults. The bulk of their diet is fish, so they are generally found perched over water looking for an easy catch. They also eat young monkeys and baby crocs and monitor lizards. Their nests are made of sticks, but have additions of papyrus, and weaver nests and can attain extremely large proportions as they add on to them each year. Lifespan in the wild is 12-24 years, but they have lived 40 years in captivity
