Zachary, can you provide more details about the seed pods? The leaves are a bit difficult to make out, but it looks like a sweet gum tree to me. Check out the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidambar...) and let me know what you think. The seed pods look like spiky balls and can be sharp.
