Giant Otter

Pteronura brasiliensis

Description:

It has the greatest body length of any species in the mustelid family. Males are between 1.5 and 1.8 meters (4.9–5.9 feet) in length and females between 1.5 and 1.7 m (4.9–5.6 ft). The animal's well-muscled tail can account for as much as 69 centimeters (27 in) of total body length.Weights are between 32 and 45.3 kilograms (70–100 pounds) for males and 22 and 26 kg (48–57 lbs) for females.

Habitat:

The giant otter lives mostly in and along the Amazon River and in the Pantanal.

Notes:

spotted these 2 giant otters in a waterway beside the road on my way out of the Pantanal along the Transpanteira towards Pocone.

Thanks.I saw them in Peru also. I think they are a bit easier to see in the Pantanal. I was lucky they were in water right near the Transpanteniera.

Well-spotted. Was in the Peruvian amazon basin where I saw some but we couldn't get anywhere near them
