Black Fairy Hairstreak

Hypolycaena nigra

Description:

They periodically oscillate their hindwings, which causes the little tails to wiggle, and this, together with the "false eye" marking at the edge of the wings diverts the attention of predators away from the butterfly's head and body.

Habitat:

rainforest

Notes:

I spotted this at the base of Amedzofe Falls in the volta region of eastern Ghana.

That is one lovely Butterfly!! It must be something else when it is flying, I think it would look like a homemade kite!! : )

I don't know about the purpose of the streamers but they're certainly extravagant. Wonderful spot

Thanks KarenL and ctsetan.
@ctsetan, I'm not sure what purpose, if any, those tails serve in flight. Anyone have any ideas?
