Some kind of hawk

possibly Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-shinned Hawk

It landed on my fire escape in the middle of San Francisco

No species ID suggestions

This hawk is actually large for a sharp-shinned hawk and the thickness of the legs suggests it is a Cooper's hawk.

Classic birder conundrum Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-shinned Hawk. I am going with Sharp-shinned. Smallish no curved tail. Nice sighting.
