Michelle, I assumed it was perennial since I didn't plant it...and it was all over one patch in my yard..but maybe a critter ate some seeds and discharged it there :)

That should be pretty telling in my experience... I have both in my yard. My ajuga is annual and does not remain in winter months, the lavender doesn't bloom, but does leave a rather dead looking stick bush all winter long (unless I cut it back). Maybe other varieties are different??

Thanks Ashish :) next year I'll take a closer look. I'd love to propagate more either way. So pretty.

I felt similarity as all suggestions comes from...Lamiaceae family.. so I was not so far..

I don't think so, it didn't smell like lavender to me anyway...too bad the plant is no longer there or I would be able to take another look to be sure. :( It really does look like Ajuga based on the blooms to me, though.

Thanks Michelle - Sarah had it a while back - Ajuga reptans looks likely(aka Carpet Bugle or Carpet weed) escapes into lawns (used for ground cover by nurseries)

I thought salvia at first, too...but there seems to be many differing opinions.
