Mystery sleeping duck...
A pond with thick reeds and dense vegetation. Other species of ducks around, including the previous spotting (tufted duck).
Unfortunately I couldn't get to the other side of the pond to see the flanks or the tail...
Hey Shu, thanks a lot for the ID! I actually saw this duck again at the same place about a year later and was able to ID it then :-). Read the whole story at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/689...
On a side note I have enjoyed you recent weavers spottings, including the nests! I have two weavers from Kenya which I have to upload and for which I'll need your help for ID: they match none in my African bird guide (even though it has about 100 illustrations for Ploceus...)
What was confusing me a little was the pale coloring towards the back, but looking at many pics on the web they do have a pale patch which is sometimes visible in this position.
When you look at your picture, you want to say, Please turn your head this way!
Thanks Sarah and Lea! Hope someone can identify it in spite of the hidden head...
He has wonderful colors!!
When I first looked at it it just looked like a lump in the water. haha
