Why are they called luna moths? Do they glow at night?

We have been using an ordinary, white bedsheet strapped up between two trees or two poles places in the ground. Then we have a mercury light and a blacklight shining on the sheet and the moths just come flying, so to speak. In my experience of doing this 3 summers in Ontario, the luna's fly in june-july and come out earlier on in the night. I would check moth lights from sunset till sunrise, and the luna's were always the one first out by the lights. Hope it helps. :)
