Compass Jellyfish

Chrysaora hysoscella

Description:

The bell-shaped body of this variety is roughly hemispherical and smooth and measures as much as 200 mm in diameter. Sixteen brown, V-shaped radial markings point to the centre of the bell, typically against a background of cream to yellowish brown. Can leave nasty stings despite its short tentacles.

Habitat:

Common around the Irish Sea and English Channel typically around mid to late summer.

Notes:

These ones were spotted among a group of about 8-10 individuals while sea-kayaking off the coast of Waterford, near the Metal Man landmark in Tramore.

This swarm of jellies came in to the bay where i live in Ireland and I was sea-kayaking among them. Each was probably about 27-28cm (11 inches) in diameter.
