Snapping Turtle

Chelydra Serpentina

Description:

Approximately 16" long shell with head and tail extending several inches on both sides. Note length of tail in photo. Dark olive and brown shell with rich brown colored body. Was a bit muck covered due to habitat with significant swarm of flies surrounding head area.

Habitat:

Trailside situated between crum creek and flooded bog type flood zone. Encountered approx 50 yards from stream and 10 yards from bog.

Notes:

Forgive poor picture quality as my border collie was straining at his lease to say hi to turtle Not so amusing anecdote was that we travelled about an 1/8 mile downstream to Doyle's favorite swimming hole and after ignoring the stick I threw he proceeded upstream to go visit his friends ignoring my commands. I breathlessly got to within 15 yards of the dog and turtle and then heard the big YELP!! The snapper seemed totally nonplussed but good ole Doyle has s nice little scrape just under his nose. Lucky it wasn't a 1/4 inch higher or a trip to vet would have been required.
