Eastern Hog Nosed Snake

Heterodon platirhinos

Description:

A short squat snake with a patterned back. It looked like it spreads a hood when threatened like a cobra, minus the fact that the only elapids in North America are coral snakes. It roughly resembles a massasauga.

Habitat:

Open sandy soil near Lake Michigan.

Notes:

Found by my sister and dad on his property in Mears, MI.
