Chiton

Tonicella lineata

Description:

Approx 4 inches long and 1-2 inches wide, brown color with 8 body sections.

Habitat:

Found embedded in hard rock on the shore in Cozumel Mexico. There were several in the area.

Notes:

Reminds me of a fossil trilobite(?)

Tonicella lineata has distinctive lines down its valves and does not have a hairy girdle such as the one you found. It is also much more brightly colored. I think the key to narrowing down your search for the species might be the hairy girdle

It is a chiton. The hairy-looking edges might help in finding the species as not all chitons have that.
