I agree with Mitch. That looks like a fox squirrel. We got them here everywhere.Also I looked at a picture of a cal. ground squirrel and they don't have a crazy tail like our squirrels and that one in the picture does.

You sure that's not a Fox Squirrel? They've been introduced to California and that looks exactly like one. Plus it's climbing a fence.
