wilsons snipe

Gallinago delicata

Description:

This snipe was a window strike bird. He was in the middle of the street when I spotted him. I herded him curbside, picked him up, slipped him under my seat and took him to my home in the woods for release, hoping that he'd find cover and recover, without fear of feral cats, cars and other hazards. They are much smaller than they appear - see last photo next to curb. Release pic shows him running fast through tall grass

Notes:

I just realized this was the 82 nd anniversary of my dad's birth, roughly ten years after his death. He would have been pleased to see that I successfully hunted a snipe. The bird had one winging slightly hanging when I found him. I checked it over before release and it appeared to be fine.

As I released him the same day, I think he was just stunned and needed the darkness of the area below my seat. He came to during the 7 minute drive home and gave me a moments worry that he would flap around, but instead dove into my map pocket for more darkness

I hope he gets well and can be released. So good you found him.
