Eastern Hognose

Heterodon platirhinos

Description:

Gray body with dark bands and black patches on the neck. Common defense mechanism for these guys is to flatten out their neck like a cobra. Next they open their mouth wide, stick out their tongue, and roll over with their belly up and play dead. This guy only flattened out his neck though. One of my favorite snake species :)

Habitat:

Found crossing the road in the morning in a mostly oak forest.
