Description:

Tiny grey and yellow fruit fly with spider silhouettes on the wings. The head and legs are yellow. Family Tephrytidae, 3 mm long. This is now an invasive species from Europe in the US. In Arizona it is a pest of Safflower where the larvae are internal feeders on the flower heads, affecting seed production.

Habitat:

Yavapai Lodge, Grand Canyon Village, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. Flew into our room at the lodge.
