No problem Amber--I have been scrutinizing my ladybug photos trying to figure out what species they are and was getting a bit confused. I did not realize they were all so different. I just found this link showing a photo of the Coccinella novemnotata (spotless). I have not spotted this type in my yard.
key characteristics for Coccinella novemnotata include: * the dark line running down the center of the elytra * the thin white line that connects the two white patches on either side of the thorax * the solid white bar on the head between the eyes
To be honest I'm guessing a little bit - but the markings on the thorax are what I made me decision by. The Spotless Nine spot usually doesn't have any white spots but a perimeter of the thorax. But again I'm guessing.
Amber: how can you tell the difference between a Spotless "Nine-spotted" ladybug (Coccinella novemnotata franciscana) and a Cycloneda sanguinea or polita?
I've got two spottings of the Spotless Ladybugs - One Spotless "Nine-spotted" Ladybug -Coccinella novemnotata franciscana which is endemic to California and one Cycloneda sanguinea
