Downy Woodpecker v. Carolina Chickadee

Picoides pubescens & Poecile carolinensis

Description:

Black and white bird found a dead branch with bugs on it. He pecked at it in a spiral fashion. When it got to the end of the branch, another bird approached. A scuffle ensued and the black and white bird won. In the last picture, you can see him still perched on the dead branch and the other bird is in the tree with leaves on it.

Habitat:

My backyard, on a dead branch of an Oak tree.

Notes:

2 birds scuffling & both have been IDd. Thanks MitchRay for the first ID & Birdlady for the second ID.

The "other" bird is probably a Carolina Chickadee, Poecile carolinensis. What do you think? This is an interesting encounter you captured!
