Pileated Woodpecker

Dryocopus pileatus

Habitat:

"Pileated Woodpeckers are forest birds that require large, standing dead trees and downed wood. Forests can be evergreen, deciduous, or mixed and are often old, particularly in the West. In the East they live in young forests as well and may even be seen in partially wooded suburbs and backyards".

Notes:

First spotting, I have wanted to see this magnificent bird for some time. Today was the day. Despite it being a gorgeous morning weather wise, there were a lot of biting flies in this particular area for some reason. I managed to get a couple of decent (not great) photos as I followed it from palm tree to palm tree swatting the flies. It was worth it, though.
