Pickerel Frog

Lithobates palustris

Description:

A common frog in the USA. Distinguishable from leopard frogs because they have more square-shaped spots along the back (rather than round-shaped), and rectangular stripes down both legs.

Habitat:

Varied -- ravines, streams, lakes, wooded areas, pools

Notes:

Considered to be the only poisonous frog in the US, the Pickerel secretes a defensive substance which can be irritating to people and highly toxic to certain predators and other frogs.
