Bee Fly (mating)

Lordotus zona

Description:

These are sexually dimorphous, bee-mimicking flies. The male is larger and white while the female is smaller and golden. Both have a dark band across the abdomen. They were in flight when I first saw them and my first thought was a large wasp. When they landed, I saw they were mating in flight.

Habitat:

Chaparral
