A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Ardea melanocephala
Large wader, about 90 cm tall, with 170cm of wingspan. Black crown and hindneck contrast with white throat. The rest of the body covered grey; easily confused with migratory Grey Heron, but its black hoodie descends under the eye-line.
Mainly resident, this bird is common all over sub-Saharan Africa; it can be mainly observed near shallow waters; but it does not shy from hunting inland. Here, observed on shores of lake Chamo, near Arbaminch town.
