Red-necked Wallaby (male)

Macropus rufogriseus

Description:

Small macropod, marsupial, soft grey grizzled fur darker on top, lighter to white underneath, tail darker at tip blending towards body lighter, reddish fur over rump and behind neck, paws, muzzle, ear tips/edges black, white face sripe on each cheek from muzzle to below ear, strong hind legs & tail, smaller fore limbs, grass & herb eater. Differs from the similar Black Striped Wallaby in being slightly larger & not having a black stripe down the back.

Habitat:

Grasslands & forests of eastern Australia, the species varies slightly throughout regions in colour shade & size. This male in north east NSW eucalypt woodland in my garden.

Notes:

Posted this image of my old friend in a very relaxed pose. He's now taking enrolments for meditation & yoga classes. Having arrived at my door of his own accord & with tattered ears, covered in ticks, barely able to move & in an emaciated state, this old bloke stayed close by, recovered and now brings his lady friend to visit with a new joey (she has a completely rounded crooked tail!)

Thank you armadeus.4, MacC, Mark for recent comments and all members of the ProjectNoah crew for this gratefully received acknowledgement of a wonderful old wallaby! You're right armadeus.4, nothing much bothers him when I'm nearby, he sees other people, dogs etc quite differently. The sloping garden within metres of my house is where he rests like this as well under the grevillea bushes. I actually sat out there within a few metres of hum to enjoy the sun also, he just slowly gave me a sideways glance, turned his head back to the sun, closed his eyes and honestly seemed to smile.Moments like that make me feel close to something that's not human & it's brings both a smile to my face & a tear to my eye. Thank you again I'll pass on your comments to him!

Congrats KD! Your meditative wallaby has been chosen by the rangers as their Spotting of the Week!

A red-necked wallaby drops by to visit a PN member in our Rangers' spotting of the week! Kdpicturemaker has monitored this grizzled old male since he first appeared emaciated and covered in ticks. Luckily he has made a full recovery and now brings his lady friend and their new joey along too!

That's brilliant Fyn and crew! Thank you so much for the nomination, I know Mr Wallaby will be quite chuffed. I will be moving from this place soon and wish I could take the animals with me (of course an impossibility & I will shed more than a few tears) as I know new owners and the neighbourhood won't afford them the same kindness. I can only wish them well, feel privileged and thank them for the beautiful moments they have given me.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!

Thank you Dilan, Mark, Danielel, Maria, Bhagya, brycegarling, beaker, jae, lizzy! for your comments. Apologies for late reply as I have not been receiving any messages.
The old fella is doing well. I think he is searching for inner peace! Like us all. Definitely a very Zen moment! Can you hear him humming? He's such a character. I have caught him a few times resting in this position but more laid back against a flowering shrub in the garden in the sun, eyes half closed, head tilted back, legs crossed...I think he's trying to show me how to obtain inner peace! Thank you again and I hope his moment brought a smile to your faces as it does to mine.
