Snowy Egret

Egretta thula

Description:

A stunning white-bodied, small heron-like bird. Snowy Egrets have brilliant black legs & bills. This helps distinguish them from all other white herons in North America. Feet are typically yellow, as is the skin surrounding the eyes. They stand roughly 1.5 to 2 feet tall, helping distinguish between the larger Great Egret & Great Blue Heron white morphs.

Habitat:

Waterways; Tidal estuaries along coast, freshwater lakes & ponds inland.

Notes:

This particular egret was in a group of about 8-10 other Snowy's and several Tricolored Herons. They seem to migrate through Virginia together as each year for the past 5 I have seen groups of the two species together. Photo taken at First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA.
