Yellow-crowned Night-Herons

Description:

Not sure what kind of birds these are I shot these photos early one morning on the Courtney Campbell causeway. The looked almost prehistoric. Anyone know what kind they are? Thanks Alice for telling me what kind of birds these are.

I'm pretty sure you have two species of heron here, you could probably break it up into two different spottings.

These are not Green Herons. They are all photos of juvenile Night Herons. The first and third photos look like Black-crowned Night Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax). The middle photo looks more like a pair of Yellow-crowned Night Herons (Nyctanasssa violacea).

These are great photos. I see adults frequently, and I assume they're nesting near me, but I've never encountered a juvenile. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that they're all brown and streaky like other young birds.
