Toyon

Heteromeles arbutifolia

Description:

Wide, alternate branched, small tree with many small oblong leaves and inflorescence.

Habitat:

Dry area in garden. Locally found in chaparral areas on the California coast. Also located in Baja California as well as the foothills of the Sierra Nevada's.

Notes:

Branches are light grey and smooth. Grows quickly after cutting. Often used as Christmas decor.

I added new pics of the berries so that may help. The third picture shows more of the between stage when the berries are changing color. Hope this can be identified, thanks for your help dandoucette. :)

The majority of cotoneaster are shrubs, so if this is a tree I'm really not sure. Might not be cotoneaster.

It could be of that genus, but I'm not sure what specific species... there's just too many. But if it helps, this spotting is a tree and not a bush...

In the rose family? Its definitely not native, its been growing in the garden since we moved here about 7 years ago and it must be older than that because its always been large.
