All domestic ducks, except for Muscovy ducks (which are not true ducks), are descended from Mallards. Thus domestic ducks are technically not separate species from Mallards.

I had a feeling they were some kind of mixture of breeds. I've heard of mallards interbreeding with other species. They let me get rather close for a shot too!

Unless someone knows different, I believe you've spotted "pond ducks", i.e. feral mixed-breed ducks, often containing some mallard, that hang about near humans hoping for a hand out.

These ducks were lying in the shade with a Male Mallard on the bank of a stream that runs through a city park.
