Spotted in a lake in Poinsett State Park, SC.

Habitat:

These snakes are almost always found near a permanent water source, a lake, stream, pond or other slow moving body.

Notes:

This snake is frequently misidentified as a cottonmouth. If you aren't sure you can tell a water snake and cottonmouth apart, yet feel threatened enough to kill anything that even resembles a cottonmouth, please check out this site.
