Phoenicurus ochruros
The black redstart is a small robin-sized bird that has adapted to live at the heart of industrial and urban centres. Its name comes from the plumage of the male, which is grey-black in colour with a red tail. With fewer than 100 breeding pairs in the UK, the black redstart is on the amber list of Birds of Conservation Concern.
What they eat: Insects, spiders, worms, berries and seeds.
Thanks Malcolm. I was a bit confused because it looks like a Robin but I didn't think it was one. Quite glad I got to spot this little guy, thanks again for the info.
Hi Stacy, Starts, Chats and Robins are closely related and often similar shape and size. The similarity to a juvenile Robin helps to make this an easy mistake but the red tail is a give-away. The evidence of a gape means this is still a juvenile or immature and it will soon develop white patches on the wings which will confirm its identity.
