Wow, guess living in Oregon all those years rubbed off. Thank you for the ID! There's no doubt about it. Ruffed Grouse it is!
Grouse is the one I always forget! If you search for images of the grouse ID I suggested, I think you'll find it's your fellar. :) And it's sometimes called Oregon ruffed grouse! It's the little crest it seems to have on its heard that is distinctive.
Game bird? Like a pheasant or partridge, perhaps. :/ I'm not sure, but that was the first thing that came to mind when looking at it.
