Amphibolurus muricatus
Also called Jacky Lizard, this robust but small lizard was a brown-grey colour with a dusky head. On the back and on either side of the mid line ran a broad pale streak which was broken into rectangular patches. The top of the head showed thin dark bands (pic 4). The toes were long but not easily discernible against the background of dried earth and leaves. The tail is said to be about 23.5 cms - difficult to capture in photos. The length of the lizard from snout to vent is said to be 12.5 cms and with the tail, the total length would be 34 cms. The eardrum is a conspicuous feature on the head - seen clearly in pics 1,2 & 3.
Dry Sclerophyll forest. This lizard was a surprise- darted across the grass, seeking shelte amongst dry grass under a gum tree.
Jacky dragon is a ground and tree dwelling liard which is cative during the day, hunting small invertebrates, ants, skinks and berries.
It may bask on low bushes, logs or rocks. they lie motionless and wait for prey to get within reach before striking.
They are found from SE Queensland through NSW and Victoria to the South Australian border.
