Crane Fly

Tipula paludosa

Description:

Also known as "Daddy Longlegs ". Fortunately, these "giant mosquitos" are not bloodsuckers. The vestigal hindwings ("halteres") can be clearly seen in this image. These antenna-like sensory organs help the oddly-proportioned fly to maintan its balance in flight.
