Snowshoe Hare

Lepus americanus

Description:

Rusty brown during the summer months. White during winter.

Habitat:

Young forests with an abundance of foliage.

Notes:

The Snowshoe Hare's large hind feet act as a natural snowshoe, preventing the animal from sinking into the snow while running. The Snowshoe Hare could also possibly be the inspiration behind the modern snowshoe.
