Desert Shaggy Mane (Old)

Podaxis pistillaris

Description:

Upon reaching maturity, this fairly common urban mushroom splits (or a child kicks it out of curiosity), to release the mass amount of dark spores onto the wind so that they can grow elsewhere.

Habitat:

Usually tends to grow in areas where the soil has been shifted. Since these rocks are a common way to decorate pathways and sidewalks, they were manually introduced, and as a result, these mushrooms now are also part of the scene. The genus Podaxis has been seen in all arid parts of the earth, excluding Antarctica.

Notes:

Adorning the outside of a Panda Express. For a short review of the many uses of this widespread fungus, see the notes to my first spotting of this species -- http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/732...
