mangrove or Pacific monitor lizard

Varanus indicus

Description:

One of 11 monitor lizard species recorded for Papua. This monitor's body "is dark green or black in color and covered with golden yellow spots", however within this scheme there is wide variation across its geographic range. This species has a vast "geographic distribution, from the Moluccas to the Solomon Islands and from Australia to Micronesia."

Habitat:

This monitor was spotted in a thin band of coastal (swamp) forest just behind Pacific ocean beach.

Notes:

This is the species I most commonly see in northern coastal Papua.
