Great Crested Grebe

Podiceps cristatus australis

Description:

The Great Crested Grebe is the largest of its family in Australia. This aptly named bird has large plumes extending from the head to form two crests on either side of the head. This is used in its extravagent mating ritual. The Crested Grebe has a wide distribution spanning Europe, Asia Africa and Australia. In Australia the species is mainly sedentary.
